Proceeds from sale of book store to fund marine lab renovations

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The University of Alaska Southeast is now in possession of its portion of the previous Auke Bay Marine Station.

    Chancellor Rick Caulfield said on Action Line Wednesday said they ended up with about 1 point 6 acres of the four acre parcel.  It's share of the parcel includes the large lab building which is adjacent to the school's Anderson Science Building.

    Renovation of the facility will be financed with the $2 Million the university received from the recent sale of its former book store building.

    When the Auke Bay Marine Station was surplussed by NOAA Fisheries both the university and the CBJ Dock and Harbors Department put in requests for the property.  An an agreement was worked out by the city and borough and the university on how to share the facility.

    The Docks and Harbors Department will have control of the dock there and a number of buildings along the waterfront and be available for future expansion of Statter Harbor.
