Pompeo asked to address transboundary mining

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Alaska's Congressional delegation has asked that mining waste be an issue at upcoming talks between US and Canadian diplomats.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is being asked by the congressional delegation and the Governor's Office to tell Canadian officials the concerns they have about mining waste crossing the border from Canada.

The State Department last December stepped into the issue.  They said it was aware of state concerns about pollution from British Colombian mines that leak into Alaska salmon streams.

The delegation sent a letter to Pompeo that also expressed appreciation for the preliminary steps taken thus far on the issue.
