Police chief defends officers in fatal shooting

Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) Fairbanks Police said a man officers shot and killed in June came prepared for war.

Police Chief Eric Jewkes said the man wore a bullet proof mask and was dressed from head to toe in modified body armor.  He said the man, Matthew Colton Stover, 21, came prepared to kill officers and others.

Stover was shot and killed June 19 near the Fairbanks Corrections Center.  Officers responded that day to a call for a man carrying a rifle outside.  When officers arrived, Stover allegedly exited his truck and fired an assault rifle at the officers.  They were able to avoid injury, got cover in the trees, returned fire and struck Stover in the head and torso, killing him.
