Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The state is considering a new fee on airplanes.
In an effort to help rural airports in the state, officials have proposed a new registration fee.
The fee would range from $150 for private planes to $250 for planes used for business.
The Alaska Department of Transportation has been studying raise to help 240 rural airports in the state. The new fee could bring in roughly $1.3 million annually.
Most of the money to fund these airports come from the general fund. The annual budget is $40 million. Another proposal being considered is an increase in aviation fuel taxes. This tax increase would have to be approved by the legislature. The registration fee is considered administrative and does not require legislative approval.
Alaska residents have until January 5th to comment on the proposal.
