Petersburg looking for police chief

Petersburg, Alaska (KINY) Borough Manager Stephen Giesbrecht gave an update on the search for a new police chief to the Borough Assembly.

He said they have run advertisements throughout Alaska for a police chief.  They also used some national websites to post the job for free.

Seven people have sent in applications.  The deadline to apply is April 21.

Giesbrecht said they will continue to work to fill the position, "We hope to look at them ourselves and then use the public safety advisory board as another review point."

Giesbrecht said the climate for hiring police officers and management is tough right now, "It's a tough position to fill.  I'm not sure we will have it filled in time befor ehte Chief leaves.  We can ask Captain Hamilton to sit in as interim chief.  We have an outside firm doing background check on the applicants.  They check with the FBI and the Alaska police standards board to make sure we hire who we want."

Kelly Swihart announced he was retiring earlier this year.  He took the job in 2013.
