Perry: Many independent travelers to Juneau first came on a cruise ship

Travel Juneau President and CEO Liz Perry

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Travel Juneau is on record in opposition to the proposed charter amendments that would restrict cruise ship visits.

President and CEO Liz Perry labels the proposals as "flawed and misinformed."

Amendment sponsors suggest that Travel Juneau should focus more on attracting independent travelers.  Perry made this point about that while a guest on Action Line.

She says they know from research that approximately one in four or one in five people who visit independently first saw Juneau on a cruise trip.

'They decided that this is where they wanted to come back and spend more time and they usually make that decision within a market cycle.  So that's like 5 to 7 years.  So it takes them a little time to set those plans, but we see a significant number of independents come in who first got just kind of a taste of Juneau on a ship."

Perry says if restrictions become too onerous, the industry might decide to take Juneau off of their schedules or relegate Juneau as a second-tier destination.
