October Declared as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Juneau, AK (KINY) - At the Monday night Assembly reorganization meeting, the new members were quickly picking up the rhythms of the work they'll be settling into. Mayor Weldon also issued some of her first proclamations, which included making October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Swarupa Toth was there to accept the proclamation on behalf of AWARE. Toth has been with the organization for ten years and serves as the Sexual Assault Response Team Manager. She told us that this proclamation is significant in raising awareness about domestic violence.

"The beauty of it is that this particular issue, domestic violence, has always been hidden in the homes, you never know if it's happening to your neighbors, relatives, or coworkers. For the city to make a proclamation and dedicate the entire month, is a real statement that shame is no longer powerful, that it is fine to come forward and ask for help. People are there to support you and are even there to celebrate survival."

Toth also told us of a survivor celebration that they are having at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall on October 23rd. The event will start at 5:30 pm and will include. . .

"It's going to be about support and the celebration of survivors."
