O'Brien says he won't run for School Board again this year

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau School Board member Sean O'Brien will not seek re-election during the local election in October.

He revealed his decision while a guest on Action Line today  (Monday).  "I am not planning on , as a matter of fact, I'm certain I'm not running again this particular election season."

O'Brien says he feels like nine years is enough and he would like to put some efforts in other directions so he won't be running again.

Based on that response, he was asked if there might be some "wiggle room" on his decision.  "Well, there's always wiggle room.  There's been times I wasn't planning on running and nobody signed up."

That happened in 2011 when only one person filed for the two seats on the ballot.

He initially served on the board from 2006 to 2008. He stepped down after that term until he decided to wage the write in campaign three years later.  O'Brien sought and won re-election in 2014.

One other school board seat is on the ballot this year.  Board president Brian Holst has told us he intends to seek re-election.
