NTSB releases preliminary report on plane crash

Prince of Wales, Alaska (KINY) Bad weather is seen as a major contributor in last week's seaplane crash.

The NTSB report said the pilot confused the snow covered slopes of the mountain with a body of water.  The 72 year old tried to take evasive action as he initiated a steep climb, only to strike the terrain below.

11 people were on board the Taquan Air flight headed from Prince of Wales Island to Ketchikan on July 10.  Six people suffered minor injury.  Fogs and visibility were factors in the crash.

The pilot said visibility rapidly decreased from up to five miles to nothing in moments before the crash.
