New statewide COVID numbers released

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported 251 new COVID-19 cases Saturday.

    All but ten involved residents.  Anchorage led the way with 59 cases.  The Bethel Census area tallied 58.   Only one case was reported in Southeast Alaska and that came in Sitka.

    Seven of the nonresident cases were from the Aleutians East Borough and were tied to the seafood industry.

    Five deaths were reported Friday.  Four involved Wasilla residents.  They included two men,  One was in his 80s while the other was in his 70s.  The women were in their 80s and 70s.   There was also an Anchorage woman in her 60s.

    Fifty-three Alaskans are hospitalized.  Three others who are hospitalized are considered persons under investigation.

    The department reports that 72,899 Alaskans have received their first dose of a vaccine while 16,186 have received both doses.

    The state's alert level remains high.
