UPDATE: New bishop for Diocese of Juneau currently serves in Alaska

Juneau, ALASKA (KINY) - Father Andrew Bellisario summed up his reaction to be named the new Bishop of the Diocese of Juneau during a press conference Tuesday morning a few hours after word of his appointment came from Pope Francis.

"Totally stunned." he said.  "To the point that I was having trouble breathing."

For the past two years the 60 year old  Bellisario has served as the Superior of the International Mission of the Vincentians in Alaska, and since May of 2016 as the Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral in the Archdiocese of Anchorage.

He called on his new flock for their assistance so that he can be the best possible bishop he can be.

The bishop elect mentioned the support of his predecessor, Bishop Edward Burns, and a conversation he had with him on Sunday.  "He gave me some good suggestions.   His are very big shoes to fill, indeed."

Bishop Burns was installed as bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, Texas in February of this year.
Father Bellisario’s episcopal ordination and installation as the 6th Bishop of the Diocese of Juneau will take place on Tuesday, October 10.
