NAMI partners up for mental wellness learning series

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - NAMI Juneau, Juneau Public Libraries, and Friends of the Library are partnering to offer a free Mental Wellness-Mini Series for Mental Health Awareness Month, which is observed in May.

The series offers three workshops: Mindfulness for Wellness on May 9, Art for Wellness on May 11th, and Writing for Wellness on May 18.

Mindfulness for Wellness will be led by Bridget Kuhar of Juneau Youth Services from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at the Downtown Library. Come explore the value of being present in our increasingly fast paced world. This introductory class will provide fundamental mindfulness concepts, as well as simple tips, tools and techniques to help incorporate mindfulness into everyday activities of life. Best for youth and adults.

Art for Wellness will be offered Saturday, May 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Valley Library by art therapist Dorolyn Alper, Carrie Kline, and Megan Gunkel. Come and learn about the profession of art therapy and how it improves wellness. Help us make a group piece of artwork to show others about the art therapy experience. This art piece will display the many things people do to stay well. People of all ages and abilities are welcome.

Writing for Wellness will be led by Erika Bergren on Saturday, May 18, at 4 p.m. in the Valley Library. Learn how writing can help explore themes of mental health in a safe environment. Writing prompts will be provided to participants to help start their journey and will be as general or specific as participants choose. Best for youth and adults.
