Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - U. S. Senator Lisa Murkowski is paying attention to the debate in Alaska over the future of the Marine Highway System.
"This is a state matter and its not for me to determine what our marine highway system should actually look like. Know that this is something that I am actively engaged in and following."
When asked what she could do from Washington, D. C., Murkowski said the Transportation Bill is coming up for debate and action. "There will be dollars that are included in that Transportation Bill that will be helpful to us. What we're are seeking is additional flexibility so that we can utilize that. We need to be working with the federal agencies whether its Customs Border Protection or Homeland to make sure that we don't put in place even more additional hurdles. We need to make sure that Prince Rupert is a key part of that tie in down there. We're working to get the Buy America waivers in place so that we can get the repairs done that we need on the ferries and on our IFA (Inter-Island Ferry Authority) ferries so we're working at the federal level along with our state partners. This is too a key transportation infrastructure to not pay attention to it."
