JUNEAU, ALASKA (KINY) - The Mt. Edgecumbe High School Lady Braves beat the Sitka Lady Wolves with a last second shot on Wednesday night inside the B.J. McGillis Field House.

Mt. Edgecumbe junior TeHana Baldwin rebounded a missed Sitka free throw, passed the ball to freshman Carliese O’Brien who dribbled into the key and scored with one second on the clock for a 40-39 win in game two of their best-of-three Region V Tournament series. The win forces a deciding game three tonight at Sitka High School for the 3A girls championship.

Mt. Edgecumbe trailed 11-10 after one quarter of action on Wednesday but took a 20-16 lead into halftime and held a 34-30 advantage heading into the final stanza.

"Offensively we dug ourselves a bit of a hole that we had to spend some time getting out of," Sitka coach Mindy Bartolaba said. "Tonight we hope to make some adjustments to our offense and have a better game."

Sitka freshman guard Maitlin Young kept the Lady Wolves in the game, scoring 11 of her game high 14 points in the second half.

Sitka hit just 17 of 32 free throws in the game, including just seven of 14 in the fourth quarter. Mt. Edgecumbe went 6-9.

“The girls have gained some confidence in the past two weeks and are putting it out on the floor,” Mt. Edgecumbe coach Kathy Forrester said. “We are a super small and physical team so we really rely on our defense.”

Forrester said she was proud the Lady Braves did not succumb to the pressure on Wednesday.

“Tonights game depends on bringing that same intensity to the court,” she said. “We can’t beat Sitka playing only two or three quarters. They are too big and talented for us not to play all four quarters.”

    Scoring Line -

Mt. Edgecumbe: Carliese O’Brien 10; Lisa Strom 8; TeHana Baldwin 5; Tessa Anderson 5; Madison Alstrom-Beans 4; Twila Strom 4; Mia Anderson 2; Kathy Jones 2.
