Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Today is Seward's Day, a state holiday commemorating the United States' purchase of Alaska from Russia.

William Henry Seward, who was the U.S. Secretary of State at the time, signed the treaty with Russia on March 30, 1867.

While many believed the nearly $7.2 million was "folly" to spend on such a vast area, Seward believed that it would prove to be a valuable asset one day.

    Monday is the 153rd anniversary.

Most state offices are closed, but Capital Transit buses are running.
