Mendenhall Glacier preparing for the tourism season

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is closed this month as staff prepares to open for the summer tourism season May 1.

    Director John Neary was on Action Line  and said  the visitor center gets about half of the visitors who come to Juneau by cruise ship.  So the center played host to just over a half a million cruise ship passengers last year, according to Neary who added that the number of cruise ship visitors is projected by grow by 19 percent over the next two years.

    He said they are the most visited site in Alaska surpassing Denali and Glacier Bay National Parks.

    They are hiring 20 temporary employees to work with the 10 permanent employees to handle the flow of people.

    Ninety ninety-seven percent of the operation there is paid by visitor's fees, according to Neary.
