Mat-Su school district bans NYT content, 5 books from curriculum

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Mat-Su school board has voted to ban the use of the New York Times as curriculum and also banned five books.

    According to The Frontiersman newspaper, the five books are I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

    Board members Sarah Welton and Kelsey Trimmer voted against the action, while President Tom Bergey voted with members Ryan Ponder, Jim Hart, Ole Larson, and Jeff Taylor to withhold the books and newspaper from the curriculum.

    According to The Frontiersman article, no members of the public made comment.
