Masking requirement in Juneau schools to be relaxed April 4

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau School Board made a decision on lifting mask requirements during a special meeting over the noon hour.

Member Brian Holst made the motion.

It reads, "Effective April 4, assuming CDC community level remains medium or low, masks or similar facial coverings designed to mitigate COVID-19 transmission and are well fitted covering the mouth and nose are optional for all persons indoors in Juneau School District facilities and on school grounds.  The superintendent has the authority to require face masks in certain situations consistent with CDC guidelines."

The vote was six to zero.  Emil Mackey left the zoom meeting and did not vote

He proposed a very long and detailed amendment during the deliberations that eventually only netted two votes.  Will Muldoon also put forth another amendment that netted just his support.

A handful of citizens offered testimony that generally supported  a relaxation of masking.

April 4 falls one week after Spring break.
