Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Assembly Lands and Resources Committee agreed to renew the lease at the Montessori School for $2,000 per month.
The lease would last for one year. The recommendation now goes to the full assembly. They have leased the Mayflower building from the CBJ in 1992. The lease payment has been $2,000 per month since 1993.
CBJ staff recommended the lease rate be increased to $2,600 per month. This equals the cost to maintain the building which is paid for by the CBJ. An appraisal of the property determined fair market value of $3,255 per month.
School officials said the COVID-19 pandemic has closed the school for two and a half months. They have applied for grants to help offset the maintenance costs.
Executive Director Laura Talpey said it has been a difficult time financially for the facility. She said an additional $600 per month would be difficult for them.
