League of Women Voters to hold public office workshop

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The League of Women Voters Juneau is aiming to take the mystery out of how run for public office.

Committee members Kristin Bartlett and Peggy Cowan spoke about the league’s "How to Run for Local Office Workshop" while guests on Capital Chat with Dan-O

Bartlett said the workshop is scheduled for the end of June.

"The workshop is going to be held on Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it's going to be at the CBJ Assembly chamber," Bartlett said. "So, you can get right in there and feel comfortable in the spot where the work actually happens."

There will be a variety of panels of local officials and past officials to offer the ins-and-outs of the jobs of Assembly and School Board. The workshop will also address the legal requirements that you have to fulfill, such as residency and being a registered voter.

Campaigning basics, and what are some good ideas to prepare yourself to run for local office, will also be discussed.

Cowan said the league, "is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens and government. That's its mission. And it tries to increase the understanding of major public policy issues and influences policy through education and advocacy. One thing to note is that the league never supports or opposes any political party or candidate."
