Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) - The seventh case of COVID-19 has been confirmed at Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau. That's an increase of one additional case from the previous day.

Commissioner of Corrections Nancy Dahlstrom said the new case involved a staff member at LCCC

"I am really happy to tell you that we have no inmates who are positive statewide, which is very good news," Dahlstrom said.

Dahlstrom added that the department has been preparing for the coming pandemic since the virus appeared on the horizon.

"Since January, DOC has been anticipating and planning for a pandemic," she said. "We hoped this day would never come, and we looked at it as a drill that we needed to be prepared for. We drilled and drilled so when it did happen we were ready. Department of Corrections facilities as you know by nature are congregant settings and we have very unique challenges and opportunities that other folks don't have, so because of this we've taken a proactive approach and we continue to make daily necessary changes as they need to be made."

Inmate movement and strong personal hygiene are also being implemented.

"We've provided additional hygiene products to all of the inmates and we have restricted the movement of inmates so that we can practice social distancing to the best of our ability in a situation such as a correctional facility," she added.

Dahlstrom also thanked the inmates taking part in a mask-making program underway within correction institutions.

"We have inmates in at least 10 of the institutions statewide who are working on a sewing project," Dahlstrom said. "They are creating and sewing masks that will be distributed first to all employees and inmates in DOC, and then our goal is that in the next couple weeks we will have 40,000 masks that the inmates have made. We have folks who are cutting, pinning, sewing and packaging these things and I'm just really pleased and proud that the inmates want to participate and give back like this."
