Lawsuit filed over campaign signs

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska has teamed up with a group that supports Mike Dunleavy for Governor to challenge the ban on political signs along state roads.

The lawsuit was filed in Anchorage Superior Court on Thursday.  It claims the State Department of Transportation violated the right of political speech through inconsistent enforcement of the law against off-site billboards in the state rights of way.

The Department recent hired part-time workers to remove signs that obstructed visibility of motorists.  The lawsuit also claims that this sweep left non-political signs untouched but threatened campaigns with penalties for signs that were not safety concerns.

The plaintiffs argue that political signs should be treated differently from other outdoor advertising because of the right to free speech.
