Latest state COVID report lists nine deaths and nearly 55-hundred new cases

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reported 5,497 new COVID-19 cases for Monday and Tuesday.

    It also reported nine deaths and 136 hospitalizations.

    The statewide alert is high, according to a release from the department.

    Juneau has the highest vaccination rate at 78.5%  The rate in northern Southeast Alaska is 73.2% and 65.7% in southern Southeast.

    The lowest vaccination rate is in the Mat Su Borough at 41.1%  The second lowest was the Kenai Peninsula at 48.4%

    Four of the deaths were residents of Wasilla which is in the Mat-Su.  There were four deaths in Anchorage and one in North Pole.  The department's release does not say where the hospitalizations occurred.
