Last Blockbuster stores close

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) Stores in Anchorage and Fairbanks will close on Sunday night.

The stores will reopen Tuesday for liquidation sales of videos and products through August.  That leaves just one Blockbuster store open in the nation.

Efforts were made to keep the stores open.  Two months ago, HBO host John Oliver donated a jockstrap worn by Russell Crowe in the 2005 movie Cinderella Man and other items from the Anchorage store.  Store officials said the donation did bring more traffic into the store.

During its heyday Blockbuster had 15 stores in Alaska.  An expansion of internet streaming and other ways to rent videos by machine, had led to reduced sales in Blockbuster stores.
