Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Klawock High School girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2021 March Madness Alaska Basketball State Championships in the Matanuska-Susitna area on Thursday, while the Klawock boys team lost a tight game to fall into the consolation round.

The Southeast Conference Klawock Lady Chieftains defeated the Alakanuk Lady Braves, from the Yukon Delta Conference, 56-19, while the Klawock Chieftains fell to the Shaktoolik Wolverines, from the Bering Sea Conference, 47-40.

"It was a great start to the tournament," Klawock coach Mary Edenshaw said. "Good to get my young girls some experience."

The Lady Chieftains jumped to an 18-7 first quarter lead over the Lady Braves behind 10 points from junior Kenai Holien and strong inside rebounding from eighth grader Kaiya Marvin.

Klawock kept the run going into the second quarter as Marvin and Holien hit back-to-back shots and soon, after a steal by Holien and pass to Zoey Edenshaw for a layup, the Lady Chieftains were up 31-11 with two minutes left in the half.

Holien and freshman sister McKinley Holien hit back-to-back jumpers and Kenai Holien added a fast break score for a 37-11 lead at the break.

Klawock scored nine points in the third quarter while holding Alakanuk to just two points for a 46-13 advantage to start the fourth. The Lady Chieftains were never threatened in the fourth quarter.

"I have two juniors who have played at the state tournament in the past," Edenshaw said. "But I also have two freshmen and two eighth graders without any or limited experience in a high school tournament let alone the state tournament."

      Klawock hit 20 of 52 field goals (38%), 2-6 three-point shots (33%) and 14-26 free throws (53%). They had 43 rebounds, 13 steals, 13 fouls and 19 turnovers.

Alakanuk went 7-52 field goals (13%), 3-33 three pointers (9%) and 2-9 free throws (22%). The Lady Braves had 36 rebounds, 11 steals, 16 fouls and 24 turnovers.

Klawock advances to a Friday semifinal, while Shaktoolik falls into a consolation game.
