Ketchikan man will spend a decade in prison for assault

Ketchikan, Alaska (AP) - 26-year-old Lapairs Shaw was sentenced last week in Ketchikan Superior Court after pleading guilty to second-degree assault.

A Ketchikan man who authorities say bashed a woman's head into a car door before running over her foot was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Associated Press reports 26-year-old Lapairs Shaw was sentenced last week in Ketchikan Superior Court after pleading guilty to second-degree assault in the attack on the woman in March.

Superior Court Judge William Carey says the couple's 4-year-old son witnessed the attack and called 911, "thinking his mom was dead."

The woman was flown to a hospital in Seattle. Prosecutors say the victim's hearing was damaged and she's still using crutches to walk.

At the time of the attack, Shaw was out on bail for a separate assault charge against the same woman.

Shaw will have five years of probation following his release.
