Ketchikan Indian Community receives federal grant

    Ketchikan, Alaska (KINY) - The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $10.5 million in transit grants to Alaska today including $93,000 to Ketchikan to purchase a new transit vehicle.

    U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the funding will improve the safety and reliability of Alaska's bus system and enhance mobility for transit riders.

    "This administration is committed to rebuilding our nation's transportation infrastructure during the current COVID-19 crisis," Chao said, "This $464 million in federal grants will help improve the safety and reliability of transit bus service nationwide as the economy returns.

    The Ketchikan grant will expand transit service for tribal residents throughout the Ketchikan Gateway Borough.  The city of Fairbanks will receive $10.4 million to rebuild the city transit center.
