Juneau seniors asked to renew sales tax exemption card

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau City Hall has notified senior citizens whose sales tax exemption card expires at the end of the year to renew their cards.

Nearly 46-hundred seniors were sent a postage-paid postcard that they are asked to fill out and drop in the mail to renew.

City Manager Rorie Watt was asked why it's necessary for seniors to renew.  "We have to know that people still live here.  That you're still around," he said.

Seniors can also renew their sales tax exemption card by going to the CBJ Sales Tax Office at 155 South Seward Street during office hours.  They will need to present a State of Alaska issued driver's license or identification card.

Once this is done, the Sales Tax Office says a new card will be mailed within 60 days.

We're told the Sales Tax Office is working on transitioning the renewal process to a staggered schedule so that each person's card will be up for renewal every few years.

Contact the CBJ Sales Tax Office at 586-5265 for additional information.
