Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau School Board conducts a special meeting this evening to take final action on its budget for the next school year.
Board member Emil Mackey was asked on Action Line how the spending plan is shaping up. "To an extent, it's the same old, same old. We are still dealing with being flat-funded for what, 15 years now, and that's the effect of about a 25 to 30 percent cut to our budget."
Mackey says Alaska's constitution says it's the state's responsibility to fund education and the Alaska Supreme Court has recognized that as the truth. "We are prohibited from raising our own revenue as a school board and as long as the state continues to neglect education in the state every district in the state will continue to suffer."
The district must submit its budget to the Assembly by the end of the month per CBJ code.
The School Board is scheduled to convene at six this evening.
