Juneau Port Director reports final 2022 visitor tally

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Norwegian Encore, the last cruise ship to visit the capital city, left on October 18th.

    According to the Juneau Port Director Carl Uchityl, Juneau welcomed 1,167,194 passengers during the 2022 post pandemic cruise season.

    He breakdown of the months and the percentage of sailing capacity:

    The 2022 passenger numbers are above 2018 but below 2019.

    As travelers continue to be more comfortable in cruising, Uchityl wrote that 2023 will be certain to exceed previous record numbers. Here's a year by year breakdown:

    • 2016, 992,092
    • 2017, 1,046,587
    • 2018, 1,118,897
    • 2019, 1,273,364
    • 2020, 0
    • 2021, 114,031
    • 2022, 1,167,194

    The numbers do not include passengers from the smaller US-flagged cruise ships, which Uchityl said is approximately 10,000 passengers annually.

    It is estimated that cruise passenger spending contributes to over $200M to CBJ businesses. The first 2023 scheduled ship will arrive Juneau on April 17th.
