Juneau Fire Rescue Reponds to Boat Fire in Gastineau Channel

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - What started out as a report of a bonfire, was actually a boat that was on fire in the Gastineau Channel, According to Fire Chief Ed Quinto.

Capital City Fire Rescue was called before midnight on Monday by dispatch to a report of a possible bonfire near the middle of the channel, south of the runway.

Quinto said both the downtown and valley fire stations responded.

"They were able to see the bonfire but it couldn't really get to it and wasn't able to determine the exact location. So I went out there, and the fire can be seen over at North Douglas south of the runway, and you can see from Seven Mile at Egan drive," Quinto said.

He described what Juneau Police saw when they arrived in the area of the reported fire.

"Officers were able to get close to the area and determined that it was actually a boat on fire on the shallows of the channel. They were not able to get to the boat, but they were able to get close enough to see it was actually a boat on fire."

CCFR was not able to get to the boat since they do not have a fireboat. They referred the incident to United States Coast Guard.

Quinto said the boat fire lasted over an hour while he was watching.
