Juneau Douglas beats Ketchikan to open Region V tournament

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Douglas Lady Crimson Bears volleyball squad defeated the Kayhi Lady Kings in the first round of the Region V 4A championship tournament on Thursday night.

    The tournament, featuring Juneau Douglas, Ketchikan and the Lady Falcons of Thunder Mountain High School, is being held Nov. 7 though 9 at TMHS.

    The JDHS squad, anchored by the solid play of junior Kiana Potter, and seniors Abby Dean and Addie Prussing, beat Kayhi 3-1 (25-8, 25-14, 14-25, 25-15) to advance to a Friday match with top-seed Thunder Mountain.

    Ketchikan's Alison Thomas and Makenzie Merrill each recorded an ace against JDHS in the second set. Juneau's Addie Prussing served two aces in a row in the fourth set.

    Ketchikan will face the loser of the TMHS/JDHS game on Friday.

    The championship game is set for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at TMHS.
