JEDC Executive Director pans proposed cruise ship charter amendments

Juneau Economic Development Council Executive Director Brian Holst

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Economic Development Council is analyzing the impacts of the proposed amendments to the City and Borough of Juneau Charter that aim to reign in cruise ship visits.

Executive Director Brian Holst said on Action Line that the impacts are negative and bad for Juneau.

He points out that the community has made incredible investments to make Juneau an attractive place for visitors including cruise ship passengers.  If the proposals are adopted, Holst said the next question is going to be how do we develop Juneau's economy.

Holst adds that there are other unanticipated impacts that they are trying to get their heads around.  That would include the possible adverse impacts of additional smaller ships since they are older and possibly less efficient.

Holst said the impacts need to be thought through.
