JDHS clips Kayhi, advances to 4A title game

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaat.at Kale boys basketball team is headed to the Region V 4A championship game.

JDHS plays Thunder Mountain at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the title game after ousting Ketchikan High School Thursday, 60-58, at JDHS.

Junior Cooper Kriegmont scored 20 points in Thursday's semifinals win, knocking down the game-winning shot at the end of overtime. JDHS and Kayhi went to the extra session with the score locked at 53-53.

Brock McCormick added 12 points in the win and senior Tad Watson scored nine points.

Tyler Slick, Josh Gentry and Kristian Pihl each scored 12 points for the Kings. Ketchikan star Chris Lee fouled out early in the fourth quarter with five points.

The Crimson Bears outscored the Kings 20-10 with Lee off the floor.

JDHS had a chance to go up by four points with 20 seconds left in regulation, but Kriegmont missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

Kayhi's Gentry then made two free throws with 14.6 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

JDHS never trailed in overtime and went up 58-56 with about 40 seconds left. The Kings tied the game on Pihl's contested 15-footer from the baseline.

JDHS called timeout with 10 seconds left. LJ Elizarde found McCormick wide open on the left-wing. McCormick's 3-pointer clanked off the rim to Kriegmont, who took one dribble and launched the game-winner from the free-throw line.

A Falcons win in Friday's championship would give them their first region title since 2014. A Crimson Bears win would set up an if-game between the same two sides at 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
