House approves education funding

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The Alaska House voted to add $100 to the base student allocation for public education today.

The move means each student would bring $6,030 to the school district.  Meanwhile the Alaska Senate today approved a bill that would give districts the money they need earlier.

Supporters argue that flat funding for legislature actually means less money because costs for health insurance and utilities continue to rise.

Alaska Senator Anna Mackinnon said she doubted there was enough support in the Senate to approve the additional $100 per student.

Today is day 88 of the legislative session.   Its expected the session will go beyond the 90 day limit.
