Columbia, South Carolina (ABC) - As the number of coronavirus cases and deaths from the pandemic climb across the country, the nurses on the front lines increasingly say they are being put at risk.
Some nurses are choosing to leave their jobs because they say their hospitals are not providing adequate safety equipment.
Meredith Johnson, a critical care nurse in South Carolina, said she feels unprotected on the job, "We shouldn't be scared. This is our job. I did sign up for this but I didn't sign up to do it without the right equipment."
Johnson added she did not ever expect to be in a position where she would be sent to work and literally risk her life, "The risk of those on the front lines contracting the virus themselves has grown so great that many have moved out of their homes to protect their families."
