Hannan legislation seeks protected land status for Funter Bay relocation camp cemetery

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Representative Sara Hannan has introduced legislation related to the Funter Bay Marine Park in Southeast Alaska.

Hannan said on Action Line that the aim of House Bill 122 is to protect the Unangax Relocation Camp cemetery in Funter Bay.

Residents of the Pribilof Island were located there in 1942.  Two of the six relocation camps established during World War II were located in Funter Bay.  Hannan said conditions were bad and the death rate was high.

The cemetery is on state land with no special protection currently.  Hannan's measure adds the cemetery to the park thus providing it protected land status.

House Bill 22 is currently in the House Resources Committee of which Representative Hannan is a member.

It also has a Finance Committee referral.
