Haines search ends happily

    Haines, Alaska (KINY) The US Coast Guard, local agencies and several volunteers found a missing 74-year-old man safe and sound.

    Alaska State Troopers said Valentino Barattin, 74, of Haines, had gone berry picking Friday and didn't return home.   He was believed to be near mile 26 of the Haines Highway.  Haines Police, three Haines Search and Rescue teams including Haines-based SEADOGS and Juneau-based SEADOGS, a US Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter, Alaska Mountain Guides, Skagway Fire Department, Haines Volunteer Fire Department and Alaska Wildlife Troopers all assisted in the search.

    Barattin, was located about 23 hours later in a wooded area near Walker Lake.  He told authorities that he had become disoriented and had suffered a slight injury.  He said he decided to wait in one location until help arrived.

    Barattin was transported by the Coast Guard Air Station Sitka Helicopter to a waiting EMS crew for treatment at the Haines Airport.
