Haines Police make adjustments for COVID-19

Haines, Alaska (KINY) - The Haines Borough Police Department has decided to limit exposure to the department's small staff of dispatchers and police officers.

They will handle requests or calls for service over the phone or in an email rather than in person for the time being.

Haines Police Chief Heath Scott said good practices adopted by local government and the public will ensure less strain on our public health institutions and first responders.

"These adjustments are intended to limit unnecessary risk.  You will see no difference in our professionalism or the high standards of the organization," he said.

Police will still respond to serious or life-threatening emergencies.  They have continued patrols and crime deterrence practices.

The department did suspend fingerprint services for the next two months.  They will accept burn permit requests over the phone.

"We are only attempting to limit contact with staff who already have a high frequency of person to person interaction, this practice will ensure the men and women of this organization are here when they are truly needed should this event be prolonged."

Haines Police can be contacted at (907) 766-6430 of (907) 766-2121.
