Governor Dunleavy calls for a special session

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has called the Alaska Legislature into special session Thursday, saying that in his conversations with legislative leadership, it is clear more time is needed.

He added that nothing is more important than giving Alaskans a long-term solution to Alaska's fiscal challenges and that this session is an important first step.

The first special session begins on May 20th in which lawmakers are directed to work on legislation relating to the states operating budget, the permanent fund dividend, and the constitutional amendment proposal.

A second special session is set for August 2nd to address other parts of a state fiscal plan including a constitutional spending limit, consideration of new revenue measures, a prohibition on new taxes without voter approval, and appropriations of federal COVID funds.
