Governor declares disaster emergencies for several areas due to extreme weather

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Severe winter storms, extreme winds, and cold temperatures have spurred Governor Mike Dunleavy to declare disaster emergencies for several areas in the state.

They include the Delta/Greely and Cooper River Rural Education Attendance Areas; the Fairbanks North Star Borough, including Nenana; the Denali Borough, and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Power outages impacted 20,000 households in the Mat-Su over the weekend, according to a release from the Governor's Office.

The Governor called on Alaskans to check on their neighbors and to stay off the roads if possible.

The declaration activates the State Public Assistance and Individual Assistance Program aimed at providing Alaskans help in meeting disaster related necessary expenses and serious needs.
