Good Samaritan helps prevent stabbing

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau police said a fight downtown could have been much worse had not a local construction worker stepped in.

Juneau police said Thomas May, 39, is charged with assault in the third degree.

He allegedly punched and kicked a 51-year-old male.   Police said May was armed with a knife at the time.   A Good Samaritan helped stop the assault by putting Mr. May in a bear hug.

Police said the victim was walking down the street on the sidewalk with a 44-year-old female when May started to yell at him and began punching him.  Several nearby witnesses intervened to stop the assault.

May fled the scene on foot but was located five minutes later by Juneau Police.

The incident occurred at the intersection of South Franklin and Front Street on May 28 just before 5 pm.
