Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The proposal to purchase a gondola ski lift for the Eaglecrest Ski Area has received a big shot in the arm.
It came during a meeting of the area's Summer Operations Task Force Thursday evening, according to Mayor Beth Weldon while a guest on Action Line. She said the Goldbelt Corporation has made a proposal.
"Goldbelt has submitted an idea that they would be willing to put in $10 Million into the gondola project, and the task force decided unanimously to move it forward to the Assembly."
She said part of the deal would be an exclusive contract with Goldbelt. "It could be a potential win-win for both of us," the mayor said. She said Goldbelt would receive a percentage of future earnings. In addition, the corporation owns a lot of land around the ski area.
Goldbelt Corporation operates the Mt. Roberts Tram.
The Assembly has authorized the purchase of the gondola with conditions. The mayor says negotiations with the owner in Austria are ongoing. The asking price was $2 Million. The cost of installation was estimated at $4.5 Million.
