Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - AWARE will be hosting Girls on the Run and Boys Run I Toowú Klatseen 5K on May 11.
The programs were created in Southeast and uses a curriculum that integrates running, while also incorporating traditional Southeast Alaskan culture and values.
"Both 21-lesson programs use mentorship, lessons on healthy relationships and communication, and experience in community service that help insulate kids from experiencing and perpetrating violence in their lifetimes," states a press release on the event.
The programs teach life skills while training for the 5K. The programs conclude with all participants completing the 5K.
A total of 47 girls from Gastineau, Auke Bay, Harborview, and Mendenhall River Schools, and 18 boys from Montessori Borealis and Harborview Elementary will take part.
The 5K will be held at Sandy Beach on Saturday, May 11. Festivities begin at 10 a.m., with the 5K beginning at 10:30 a.m.
