Freeman selected as next principal of Juneau charter school

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Community Charter School has selected Nathan Freeman to be the next principal.

JCCS is a kindergarten through eighth-grade school in the Juneau School District where students learn in multi-grade classrooms with small class sizes.

Freeman is currently a principal in Teller, Alaska at James C. Isabell School in the Bering Strait School District. His educational experience includes work as a district Ed-tech specialist for North Slope Borough School District in Utqiagvik; classroom teacher at Joann A. Alexie Memorial School, Lower Kuskokwim School District in Atmautluak; and teacher apprentice at Northfield Middle-High School in Northfield, Vermont. He has also supported schools as a Close Up Foundation program advisor, cross country coach, and site technology specialist.

The Juneau School District began a nationwide search for candidates earlier this year. JCCS Academic Policy Committee members and district staff interviewed candidates on April 27.

Taylor said that an important factor in the decision was the input from JCCS staff who appreciated Freeman’s leadership style and added, “In attending the candidate meet and greet with all our candidates, I was especially thrilled to hear Nate's creative ideas to address the challenges ahead of us, to inspire our students and families, and to continue our mission. We are very happy to welcome Nate to the JCCS family and work with him in our school's important contribution to Juneau's students and educational offerings.”

Freeman holds a Master's of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and completed the Vermont Teacher Apprenticeship Program.
