Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) Four men who spent nearly 20 years in prison before their convictions were overturned have the sued the city.
A hearing before a federal judge Thursday heard arguments on whether the argument should proceed as attorneys for the city had filed a motion to dismiss the litigation.
The Fairbanks News-Miner reported George Frese, Kevin Pease, Marvin Roberts, and Eugene Vent were convicted of second-degree murder in the 1997 murder of John Hartman, 15. The convictions were vacated in December 2015, after they reached a settlement with the state and agreed not to sue government agencies.
Defense attorneys argued new evidence proved the four men were innocent of the crime. The claim the agreement not to sue isn't legally binding because they were coerced into signing.
