Founder of Allen Marine dies

    Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - Bob Allen died Monday at the age of 83.

    A memorial service has been scheduled for this Friday at St. Michaels Cathedral.

    A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 am.

    Allen and three generations of his family have owned the business since 1970.  They provide tours in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan.

    The Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce honored Allen and his wife Betty in January with the Cossack Cap Award.

    Allen Marine won the Business of the Year Awards in 1996 and 2012.  They are also members of the Visitor Industry Hall of Fame. 

    The award honors those who have distinguished themselves in unselfish and extraordinary public service in Sitka. 

    The Allen's opened the shipyard in 1968 and began repairing fishing boats. 

    In 1970 they offered their first tours in Silver Bay.  Over the years they've provided hundreds of job opportunities.
