Former Alaska First Lady passes away

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Bella Hammond died at the age of 87 on February 29, according to her obituary.

    Her husband, former Gov. Jay Hammond died in 2005.  He served as governor from 1974 to 1982.

    Hammond was survived by her daughters, Heidi and Dana, two grandchildren, a stepdaughter Wendy Hammond, and Wendy's son.

    The Anchorage Daily News said Hammond established the First Lady's Volunteer Award program in 1975 to honor volunteers for exemplary and exceptional service to the communities they live in.
