Final reading for Juneau School District FY22 budget, approved

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Much of the Juneau School Board's special meeting for a final reading of the FY22 budget was on what to do with a $257,000 fund balance. The board voted to use their fund balance to help with three areas in need in the district and then approved the whole operating budget.

$54,000 of the fund balance will go to the Tlingit language programs in the middle schools, which Superintendent Dr. Bridget Weiss said was lacking in comparison to the elementary and high school ones.

$108,000 will be allocated for teacher and classroom support. Board members repeatedly brought up the need to support teachers as they transition back into the classroom with students who may not have had in-person instruction in over a year.

The remaining amount of the balance will be used for a position to revitalize the district website and assist with media outreach to families.

The board approved the full $71.5 million operating budget. The budget will be sent to the City and Borough of Juneau by April 5.
