Dunleavy endorsed by cops

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) The state public safety officers unit has endorsed republican candidate Mike Dunleavy for governor.

The union represents State Troopers, Juneau police, Alaska Wildlife Troopers and other smaller agencies.

The union said Dunleavy will put public safety first and attack the crime problem.

"Mike Dunleavy has spent many years living in rural Alaska – he understands the unique challenges,” said Doug Massie, president of the PSEA’s Division of Public Safety chapter.

Massie said public safety needs to be the top priority of the new governor.

Dunleavy said he would make sure police have the resources, laws and regulations to get Alaska back on track.  He also mentioned recruitment of and retention of troopers and law enforcement officers.

In 2014, the PSEA's political action committee endorsed Gov. Bill Walker.

Last month, the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association endorsed Democrat Mark Begich for governor.
